ATHENS, Ga. - Megan McAllister hit a two-out, two-run screamer over the leftfield fence in the bottom of the third inning, and Kasi Carroll helped her own cause with an opposite field solo shot in the fourth, as 10th-ranked Georgia recorded its seventh-straight victory over Mississippi State with a 3-0 triumph over the 25th ranked Bulldogs in the series opener Saturday afternoon at the Georgia Softball Stadium.
Callye Williams singled twice on three trips to the plate and junior catcher Blair Geddings turned in a 1-for-3 hitting line to extend her hitting streak out to five games for the Bulldogs (30-13, 4-7 SEC) who dropped their fifth consecutive game, all of which have come in league play. Chelsea Cantillo singled twice and scored once for Georgia (36-9, 16-3) who has now won eight consecutive games.
MSU starter Stephanie Comeaux (14-5) struck out four and walked two over her 12th complete game of the campaign, saddling the loss after surrendering a trio of earned runs on seven UGA base hits. Carroll (16-3) picked up the win for the Red and Black, allowing just four hits and walking one while striking out 10.
(Comeaux) really didn't throw bad pitches, said Mississippi State head coach Jay Miller. The first one was a rise inside that (McAllister) was sitting on a little bit and the second one was a rise outside and (Carroll) just threw her bat out and drove it. It was a good piece of hitting on their part. The problem is, we had some opportunities early and we didn't cash in. We haven't been able to get anybody to step up and drive in runs for us.
State got a little bit of something going in the first frame of the contest, moving Nakita Boyce into scoring position via a throwing error by Georgia shortstop Allison Horne, but Carroll calmed the storm, inducing a Courtney Bures groundout, before slamming the door on a strikeout by Katie Johnson.
Despite recording a pair of outs with Georgia's first three at-bats in the third, MSU found itself looking at a quick deficit when McAllister hammered Comeaux's first offering down the leftfield line for the 2-0 lead. Carroll's two-out solo job in the fourth would provide the final.
The Maroon and White got a single by Geddings to lead off the third, but could not buy a hit for much of the rest of the game, seeing its next eight batters go down in order before a two-out single by Bures in the sixth. Carroll would go on to sit down four of the next five MSU batters in the game, however, allowing just a one-out single by Williams in the seventh.
