May 25, 2016 | Softball
Mississippi State (30-12, 4-6 SEC) will renew its rivalry with Georgia (35-9, 15-3) for the 29th time when the two open up the weekend with a 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon doubleheader. The two teams will return to the diamond again on Sunday to close out the set with a 1 p.m. single game. All three games will be broadcast live over the airwaves on WMSV 91.1 FM with Stephen Cole handling all the balls and strikes and Todd Anderson providing color commentary.
In addition, all three games can be followed in progress via a live stats link at the official Internet home of the Mississippi State athletic department, www.MStateAthletics.com.
State enters the weekend fresh from a 2-1 upset loss to Ole Miss on Wednesday evening in the featured game of the M&F Bank Fastpitch Classic at Ridgeland's Freedom Ridge Park. Georgia, which enters the weekend riding a seven-game winning streak, proved victorious in its 16th consecutive league series by posting a three-game sweep at South Carolina on Wednesday and Thursday.
Megan McAllister paced the Georgia offense in its series against the Gamecocks after going 7-for-9 (.778) with two doubles, a home run, and five RBI. Senior Courtney Knight hit at a .500 clip against South Carolina after tallying six hits and four RBI. The pitching trio of Kasi Carroll, Jessica Doucette, and Katie Griffith limited the Gamecocks to five runs in the three-game set. Carroll improved to 6-0 in conference play after hurling a three-hit shutout in game one against South Carolina.
MState leads the all-time series with the Red and Black by a 16-12 count, but the Maroon and White have dropped 10 of its last 12 against their SEC East counterparts, including the last six straight. MSU's last triumph against Georgia came on the shoulders of a 5-1 victory on March 13, 2004, at the Georgia Softball Stadium.
