STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State rallied for two-runs in the fourth and sixth innings to break open an otherwise close game and the Bulldogs pushed their win streak out to double digits with a 5-2 victory over Northwestern State in its 2006 Bulldog Round-Robin opener Friday afternoon at the MSU Softball Field.
Hayle Guess tallied a 2-for-4 day at the plate to push her career-best hitting streak out to 10 games, while Callye Williams and Katie Johnson each drove in a pair of runs with one swing of the bat amidst the two-run innings in leading MState (10-0) to its longest winning streak in two seasons. Jamiee Stinson hit a two-run homer to highlight a 1-for-2 hitting line that paced the Demons (6-6).
Stephanie Comeaux (5-0) allowed just two hits and struck out four in hurling her fourth complete game of the season to nab the win for the Maroon and White. Amanda Glenn (3-5) saddled the loss for NSU after allowing five earned runs on seven hits and a trio of walks.
(Katie Johnson) came in and gave us a big hit to drive in a couple of runs and then we got Callye's home run to put it away after they started climbing back into the ballgame a little bit, said Mississippi State head coach Jay Miller. Both of those were big hits and broke things open for us and keep the momentum on our side and give us a little bit of insurance.
State showcased its arsenal immediately, getting Guess aboard via a bunt single to begin the game and used a hard hit by Nakita Boyce with the next at-bat to provide the scoring chance that was nixed by NSU on a play at the plate. Amidst the shuffle on the play, Boyce had moved to within 60 feet from scoring, setting the table for Courtney Bures' run-scoring single that gave the Maroon and White a quick 1-0 lead.
State utilized a one-out single and an ensuing walk to put a pair of runners aboard in the fourth, then used a single to centerfield to plate both runs and extend its lead out to three. However, Northwestern State cut its deficit back to a single run on Stinson's two-run homer off the leftfield scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth.
State got a one-out single from rookie Sammie Jo Bailey in the sixth, before Williams blasted her first home run of the season with the next at-bat on a 1-and-0 offering from Glenn to provide the final.
