Bulldogs Locked In At No. 7 Seed For SEC Tournament
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- With the Bulldogs trailing 4-0 with one on and one out in the bottom of the second inning, heavy rains moving across the state of Mississippi forced the cancellation of Mississippi State's series finale with the nationally-ranked Florida Gators Sunday afternoon at the Mississippi State Softball Field.
Mississippi State clinched the series with a pair of victories Saturday afternoon, defeating the Gators 7-4 in the opener of the doubleheader and 9-5 in the nightcap.
With the results, the Bulldogs will be the No. 7 seed in the 2004 SEC Tournament to be held May 13-16 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Maroon and White will play the second game of the postseason gala at 1:30 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined.
Georgia currently maintains a one-half game lead on Tennessee for the No. 2 seed with one conference series remaining for both squads. Georgia plays at No. 14 Alabama next weekend, while the No. 11-ranked Lady Vols host Mississippi in Knoxville, Tenn. The outcome of those games will also decide the winner of the SEC Eastern Division title.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday evening when Mississippi State closes out its 2004 regular season road schedule at UAB. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at George Ward Park. State will return home on Wednesday to host the Blazers in a single game also slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
