Red And Black To Face Maroons In Rubber Match On Sunday
ATHENS, Ga. -- Nationally ranked Georgia rallied for runs in each inning, then climbed on the back of a two-hit shutout from Kasi Carroll, to even its series with Mississippi State on a 9-0 blanking of the Maroon and White in abbreviated innings in college softball action Saturday afternoon at the Georgia Softball Complex in Athens, Ga.
Mississippi State got one hit apiece from both Iyhia McMichael and Tanelda McDonald, but could not muster any offense from the rest of its lineup against the gem from Carroll. Georgia got three hits apiece from both Nicole Barber and Kim Wendland, but got support from its eight and nine hitters who both provided home runs.
Mississippi State starter Melissa Massey (7-5) struggled in her second straight appearance and was saddled with the loss after surrendering a pair of runs on four hits and a walk in just one and two-thirds innings of work. Stephanie Comeaux, who posted the upset victory in game one of the series, allowed seven earned runs on eight hits and a walk in just three and two-thirds innings of work but got the no decision. Carroll, who earned just her third start of the season against State, struck out six and walked one to pick up the victory.
Michelle Green and Ashley Godfrey provided RBI knocks in each of the first two frames to give Georgia a 2-0 lead heading into the third, but the Red and Black added to its advantage in the third on a two-run shot by Ashley Godfrey. The hosts posted a single run in the fourth as well on a run-scoring single by Kim Wendland, then put the mercy rule into effect with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, the last two coming on a towering blast by Green over the scoreboard in leftfield.
Mississippi State and Georgia will close out their series on Sunday afternoon when the two canine clans engage in the series rubber match. First pitch of the contest is set for 1 p.m. EST at the Georgia Softball Complex.
