Hardee Fifth In Decathlon; McWilliams In 1500M Finals

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Mississippi State received a boost Thursday night at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships when freshman Trey Hardee placed fifth in the decathlon.
Hardee becomes the second freshman in MSU history to become an all-American. Seven-time all-American Lorenzo Daniel was State's first freshman to score at nationals.
Hardee tied for first in the pole vault, clearing 16-4 3/4 and ranked second in the 110-meter hurdles (14.45). The Vestavia Hills, Ala., native came in 16th in the discus (121-3) and 18th in the javelin (155-6). He closed out the meet with a personal-best time in the 1500m, crossing the line in 4:44.07. The freshman tallied 7,468 points through the two days of competition.
In other action late Thursday night, Tiffany McWilliams advanced to the finals of the women's 1500m run. She ranked first in the preliminaries with a time of 4:10.60, the sixth-fastest time for a collegiate in history. The sophomore will try to become State's first women's track national champion on Saturday.
The men's 4x400m relay team did not advance to the finals, ranking 13th in the field with a 3:07.29 time.
After two men's events scored, Arkansas leads with 18 points. MSU currently is in ninth with four points.
Friday night's races for State's men include the 400-meter dash semifinals at 8:40 p.m. PDT and the 100-meter dash finals at 9:05.
