STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Mississippi State fifth-ranked men's track team gained 10 entries into the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships field, as announced by the national office late Monday.
State has three athletes scheduled to run in three events at Sacramento State University June 11-14. Senior Pierre Browne and junior Marquis Davis both run in the 100m and 200m, and the duo will also make up half of the 4x100m relay team. The two have taken home a combined eight all-American titles in the past two years.
Sophomore LaChristopher Lewis is an automatic qualifier in the 400m dash and is slated to run legs on the 4x100m team and the 4x400m team. He finished third at the 2003 SEC Outdoor Championships in the 400-meter dash.
Two Bulldogs have two entries apiece. Senior Kelvin Harris earned a spot in the 110-meter hurdles at the NCAA Mideast Regional and is a member of the 4x400m relay team. Sophomore all-American Glenn McFadden made the 200m dash field as an automatic qualifier from the Mideast region. He will also run a leg on the 4x100m relay team.
One freshman made the field from MSU. Trey Hardee, a Vestavia Hill, Ala., native, will compete in the decathlon. He finished third at the SEC Championships three weeks ago.
The 4x400m relay team will also have juniors Keston Nelson and Jamel Ashley. Ashley is a former junior college all-American, while Toronto native Nelson will compete in his first NCAA national meet. Nelson finished eighth in the 400m at the NCAA Mideast Regional.
Sophomore Tiffany McWilliams is the only female to make the field from MSU. The Red Bay, Ala., native ranks second in the country in the 1500m. She finished second in the mile at the NCAA Indoors this year.
Events begin in Sacramento on June 11 at Hornet Stadium. Results will be posted at www.hornetsports.com and www.ncaasports.com.
