McWilliams Takes Mideast Regional 1500M; Second In 800M
May 25, 2016 | Track & Field
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sophomore Tiffany McWilliams almost pulled a second double win, winning the 1500m and coming in a close second in the 800m at the inaugural NCAA Mideast Track Regional.
The Red Bay, Ala., native clocked her 1500m at 4:14.36, a Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium record. She then finished .08 seconds behind Butler's Becky Lyne in the 800m to rank second at 2:02.97 on an extremely windy day on Ohio State University's campus. McWilliams advances to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif., in both events.
Senior Pierre Browne finished second in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 10.14. He now goes to the NCAA Championships looking for his first outdoor title. Junior Marquis Davis finished sixth in the race but should advance to Sacramento by virtue of his 10.10 time earlier this year. The NCAA announces wild-card entries on Tuesday.
Two Bulldogs came in fourth in their events. Senior Kelvin Harris ran the 110m hurdles in 10.65 to finish fourth and advance to the NCAAs for the first time in his career. Sophomore LaChristopher Lewis crossed the line fourth in the 400m dash (46.30) to punch his ticket for Sacramento.
"The whole national setup is to protect elite athletes by just running the preliminaries to get to nationals," said head coach Al Schmidt. "So we took advantage of the rules and protected Marquis and Pierre as well as the 4x100m relay team. At the same time, we used the rules to get Kelvin and Glenn into the meet. We still hope our 4x400m relay team makes the field."
One other Bulldog, Glenn McFadden, finished fifth in the 200m dash and qualified for the NCAA Championships. Browne and Davis both look to grab one of the six wild-card spots in that event to go to nationals.
Sophomore Keston Nelson contributed a point for the Bulldogs, coming in eighth in the 400m dash (47.32).
Arkansas' men took home the team title, scoring 73 points. MSU's men finished tied for ninth with 28 points. LSU's women take home the first Mideast Regional women's team win with 95 points. State's women finished 13th with 18 points.
State runs next at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Sacramento State University June 11-14.
