NCAA Announces Competitors For Outdoor Track Championships
May 25, 2016 | Track & Field
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State's track and field teams have seven members going to Baton Rouge, La., for the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The MSU provisional qualifiers taken on the men's side include senior Dion Crabbe in the 100-meter dash (10.28) and sophomore Marquis Davis in the 200-meter dash (20.70).
As for MSU's women, they had their lone provisional qualifier make the meet in freshman Tiffany McWilliams. The Red Bay, Ala., native will run the 1500 meters at LSU, the event that she shattered the school record (4:20.13) in last weekend at the Georgia Tech Invitational. This is McWilliams' first ever NCAA championship appearance.
The fourth-ranked men's team knew it would have four representatives in the field. The 4x100-meter relay team of Glenn McFadden, Davis, Crabbe and Pierre Browne were automatic qualifiers, as well as Browne in both the 100 and 200 meters and Crabbe in the 200m.
It will be Crabbe's first time to compete at an NCAA Championship event. He qualified in the long jump indoors in 2001 and in both the 60m and 200m this indoor season but did not survive the cut either time.
The Toronto native Browne will be making his third straight NCAA appearance, as he competed in both the 100 and 200 meters as a freshman and sophomore. He advanced to the semifinals in both races two years ago.
Davis, LaChristopher Lewis and McFadden will all be making their first showings at the outdoor championships. Davis, a Memphis native, earned all-American honors indoors in the 200m this year. The freshman McFadden missed the cut in the 200 meters but competes on the 4x100m relay team. Lewis, a freshman from Coldwater, Miss. serves as the alternate for the 4x100m team after he was not selected in the 400 meters.
The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships begin in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, May 29.
