Competitive Second Scrimmage Catches Sherrill's Eye

"I thought we got an awful lot of good work done," Sherrill said. "We didn't have that many penalties and I thought we got after each other on both sides of the ball.
"We didn't throw the ball particularly well early in the scrimmage," Sherrill continued, "but we know some of the guys we need to get the ball in the hands of."
Sherrill singled out wide receiver Ray Ray Bivines and tailback Fred Reid as offensive playmakers. He also lauded the spring play of wide receiver Will Prosser.
State's first offense took its first possession 50 yards, but fumbled inside the 5-yard line to short-circuit the drive. That setback seemed to hurt the offense, which went 10 consecutive series thereafter without a touchdown. The defense punctuated that work with a safety and another fumble recovery.
But the offense rebounded in the final half of the scrimmage, scoring seven TDs in its last nine possessions. Four of those scores came in short-field situations, with Reid scoring twice on short runs.
First-unit quarterback Kevin Fant threw a pair of touchdown passes -- one to Bivines and the other to Darius Tubbs, and reserve Kyle York tossed one TD pass and scored once on the ground.
