Men Tie For First, Women Second At Outdoor Opening SEC Quadrangular

Junior Pierre Browne Qualifies For NCAAs In 100m
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Mississippi State men's track team tied for first place while the women placed second at the SEC Quadrangular at Spencer Stadium/Maddox Track in Starkville, Miss., Saturday.
Arkansas' women won the women's team competition with 172 points, while the Lady Bulldogs came in second with 168 ?˝. The Bulldogs tied with Alabama for first with 177 points.
Junior all-American Pierre Browne automatically qualified in the 100-meter dash in the first outdoor meet of the season. His time of 10.13 is the second- best 100m timing in MSU history, behind Lorenzo Daniel's mark of 10.00
"Pierre's mark was a big plus for us," said head coach Al Schmidt. "We just tied with the second-ranked team in the country on the men's side, which is big. We're also proud of our women, placing just behind a top-10 Arkansas team."
MSU freshmen also had a banner day for head coach Al Schmidt. Glenn McFadden, a high school all-American, finished first in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 21.05, while Matthew Denton placed first in the high jump, clearing 6-8.
Senior Tommy Barksdale took first in the 5000 meters (16:16.54) and sophomore Clay Garner won the javelin competition with a throw of 195-7. The Bulldog relay teams placed first in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. The 4x100m team's mark of 39.99 provisionally qualified them for the NCAAs.
Senior Kelvin Harris also placed second in the 110-meter high hurdles (13.97), while senior Viktor Mara took second in the hammer throw (164-7).
For the women, senior all-American Camille Harper and freshman Tiffany McWilliams both earned double wins. Harper placed first in the 100 (11.63) and 200 meters (23.93) while McWilliams took first in the 800 (2:11.78) and 1500 (4:30.04) meters.
Junior Christine Zawaski also finished first in the 3000 meters (10:03.16). Freshman Crystal Averitt took third in the discus with the second-best throw in school history (141-0)
MSU's track teams return to action Thursday, March 21, at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
