MSU Men's Golf 11th at SEC Championship

SEA ISLAND, Ga. - The Mississippi State men's golf team fired an opening-round 304 to sit in 11th place following the opening round of play at the SEC Championship in Sea Island, Ga. State shot a 304 for the opening 18 holes at the Sea Island Golf Club to lead Arkansas by one shot. Georgia fired a 5-under par 275 to take the clubhouse lead over Florida and Tennessee.

Codie Mudd led MSU with a 3-over 73 that placed the State sophomore in a tie for 22nd place.

Freshman Andrew Saft finished Friday's opening round with the second-best score on the squad. Saft, playing in his second career tournament, carded a 76 to stand tied for 37th place heading into Saturday's second round.

Senior captain Scott Shelton carded a 77 to tie with eight other golfers in 40th place, and redshirt freshman T.J. Washburn fired a 78 to end the opening round tied for 49th place.

Junior Jason McKenzie rounded out the starting five for head coach Greg Martin's squad with an 81 that placed him in a tie for 57th place.

State resumes action with Saturday's second round before closing the tournament with final-round play Sunday.
