LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior shortstop Kayla Winkfield received South All-Region third team honors, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Thursday.
This marks the first time Winkfield has received the honor, while it now gives Mississippi State softball a total of 37 NFCA All-Region nods since 1997 and 10 in five seasons under head coach Vann Stuedeman.
“I am so happy for (Kayla) Winkfield because I know how hard she has worked to earn this recognition,” Stuedeman said. “She is the perfect example of MSU softball; come here, buy in, work hard, and you can accomplish your softball dreams.”
Winkfield started in all 57 games for the Bulldogs in 2016 and did not miss an inning at the shortstop position. The Giddings, Texas native led MSU in batting average (.330), runs scored (39), total bases (82), at bats (179), hits (59), triples (6), slugging percentage (.458), stolen bases (17) and total plate appearances (210). Her six triples not only lead the Southeastern Conference, but they also rank ninth in all of Division I.
Winkfield will continue her softball career among the professional ranks with the Pennsylvania Rebellion of National Pro Fastpitch after they selected her 35th overall in the 2016 NPF Draft on April 14.
