MSU Caps Spring Season At Home With Samford Exhibition
April 14, 2016 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Spring comes to a close for the Mississippi State soccer team this Friday, as the Bulldogs wrap up the exhibition slate by hosting Samford at 7 p.m. CT.
MSU has turned in a 2-2-2 record so far this spring, with both wins coming at the MSU Soccer Field against Southern Miss and Louisiana Monroe on March 5. The return home for the Bulldogs will mark the third and final home friendly of the 2016 spring season. Friday's contest will also be the last chance fans can see the team in action until the start of the 2016 regular season in August.
Last time out the Bulldogs fell to TCU in Frisco, Texas, on a day that was dominated by windy conditions. A total of 18 players saw action against the Horned Frogs last Saturday, with freshman Courtney Tompkins going the distance at goal for MSU.
For Friday's friendly, Samford and MSU have faced off eight times in the programs history. State holds a 5-2-1 advantage against Samford, while the last meeting between the two programs was over ten years ago in 2005.
MSU turned in a 5-10-3 record last season to secure one of its best seasons in recent history. The three conference wins in 2015 were the most since 2011, as the Bulldogs just missed making their first appearance in the SEC Tournament since 2004.
State returns 19 players who made at least one start from last season's squad. Points (10) and assists (4) leader Mallory Eubanks will headline the returnees, followed by co-goal (4) leaders Kennadi Carbin and Kiley Martens.
The friendly will be the final athletic event starting on campus for the beginning of Super Bulldog Weekend on Friday.
