March 07, 2016 | Track & Field
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Concluding her senior indoor season, Cornelia Griesche has been awarded the Southeastern Conference Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year, the league announced Monday.
"I feel extremely honored being named the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year," Griesche said. "Finding the optimal balance between academics and athletics is sometimes challenging, but the enormous support of everyone at MSU makes it possible. Mississippi State University and it's athletic department create the perfect environment to succeed on and off the track."
Throughout her time at MSU, Griesche has held a cumulative 4.0 GPA. The dual sport athlete was also named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association Division I All-Academic Individual list at the conclusion of the 2015 cross country season. This was the second year in a row she has earned this honor.
The economics major has also been named to the MSU President's List every year at MSU.
Griesche is not only a standout in the classroom, but also on the track as she saw a successful season that led to her finishing third at the SEC Championships in the 5000m run and fourth in the 3000m run. Her time of 9:23.88 in the 3000m run at the SEC Championships is the second best time in program history.
The Ingolstadt, Germany native will leave her mark in the MSU record books after running the 5000m run school record earlier this season at the Music City Challenge with a time of 16:22.93.
“We're always happy when our athletes are recognized for not only their athletic skills, but also their academic skills,” MSU coach Steve Dudley said. “I'm excited to see athletes succeed and Cornelia has always been a great representative of our teams.”
Also announced Monday was the First and Second All-SEC teams. SEC mile run champion, Marta Freitas earned first-team All-SEC honors. Griesche along with Logan Boss, Kimari Martin, Madison Milhoan and Ffion Price were awarded Second-Team All-SEC accolades.
The MSU men's team will be competing in the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend in Birmingham, Ala., while the women's team will turn focus toward the outdoor season that begins March 18-19 at the Alabama Relays.
