STARKVILLE, Miss. – Former Bulldog and current Detroit Lion Darius Slay is the latest to be featured on Mississippi State football's #FromStateToSundays digital billboard campaign.
The digital billboards will be on display Sunday in four locations in Detroit, with the Lions hosting the Chicago Bears at noon CT live on CBS:
I-96 - Westbound
I-94 - Eastbound
I-94 – Westbound
I-275 – Northbound
Slay was selected by the Detroit Lions in the second round (36th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft and played in 13 games as a rookie, drawing four starts—including a starting nod in the season opener. He went on to become one of the Lions' top corners, starting all 16 games in both 2014 and 2015. In 2014, he tallied a career-high 61 total tackles with 17 pass deflections and two interceptions. In 2015, the Brunswick, Georgia, native racked up 59 total tackles and 13 pass deflections with a pair of picks. Through 10 games in 2016, Slay has tallied 32 total tackles and a sack, with 11 pass deflections and two game-clinching interceptions.
Slay found his way to MSU after a standout career at Itawamba [MS] Community College, where he was twice named an All-Region 23 selection. In his first season as a Bulldog, his junior year in 2011, he saw action in all 13 games as a reserve in the secondary. He finished the year with 23 tackles, four pass deflections and an interception that he returned for a 72-yard score at Georgia. As a senior, Slay became one of the better cover corners in the Southeastern Conference, receiving second-team All-SEC by the league's coaches and honorable mention All-American by Pro Football Weekly.
Last weekend, MSU featured Chicago Bear Pernell McPhee in five locations in Chicago. The defensive end-turned-linebacker has appeared in six games for the Bears this season, tallying eight tackles and 2.0 sacks. As part of a stingy Bulldogs defense from 2009-10, he started in all 25 games and twice earned first team All-SEC honors.
A total of 13 Bulldogs are currently on active NFL rosters. Another is on injured reserve and four others are on practice squads. All 18 of them played for Dan Mullen at State.
