STARKVILLE, Miss. – Former Bulldog and current Chicago Bear Pernell McPhee is the latest to be featured on Mississippi State football's #FromStateToSundays digital billboard campaign.
The digital billboards will be on display Sunday in five locations in Chicago, with the Bears hosting the San Francisco 49ers at noon CT live on FOX:
West Hubbard Street at North State Street
Grand Avenue at Lasalle Street
West Randolph Street at North Jefferson Street
Milwaukee Avenue at Chicago Avenue
North Avenue at Elston Avenue
McPhee was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round (165th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft and played in all 16 games for the Ravens in 2011, tallying 23 total tackles and 6.0 sacks. That year, he helped the Ravens to the AFC Championship Game. The following year, he saw time in 12 contests, starting in six of them for the Ravens team that won four-straight games in the playoffs en route to hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XLVII after defeating San Francisco. McPhee tallied a career-high 7.5 sacks in his final season with Baltimore in 2014, playing in all 16 games.
The Pahokee, Florida, native found his way to the Windy City after signing a five-year contract with the Bears in March 2015. In his first season with Chicago, he started in 12 of the 14 games he played in, racking up a career-high 53 tackles and 6.0 sacks. Thus far in 2016, McPhee has appeared in five games, tallying eight tackles, 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble as an outside linebacker for the Bears.
McPhee played two seasons for MSU after transferring from Itawamba Community College in Fulton, Mississippi, where he earned NJCAA All-American first team honors. His success from the defensive end spot continued in the Maroon and White from 2009-2010, as he started in all 25 games in his two years as a Bulldog. He earned first-team All-SEC honors in both his junior and senior years and served as a team captain as a senior in 2010. In his senior season, he helped the Bulldogs to its first nine-win season since 1999 and a victory against Michigan in the 2011 Progressive Gator Bowl. He totaled 91 tackles (46 solo), 7.0 sacks and 22 tackles for loss in his MSU career.
Two weekends ago, MSU featured Seattle Seahawk K.J. Wright in three locations in Seattle. In the Seahawks win against former MSU teammate Fletcher Cox and the Philadelphia Eagles that week, Wright piled up 10 tackles combined. Last weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Wright tallied eight tackles. The linebacker from Olive Branch, Mississippi, played a key role on the MSU defense from 2007-2010, including helping the Bulldogs to nine wins and a victory against Michigan in the 2011 Gator Bowl as a senior alongside McPhee.
A total of 13 Bulldogs are currently on active NFL rosters. Another is on injured reserve and four others are on practice squads. All 18 of them played for Dan Mullen at State.
