Peng, Baik End Round One of Trinity Forest Invite In Top 20
November 07, 2016 | Women's Golf
DALLAS, Texas – Battling through a day of rough weather and rain delays, the Mississippi State women's golf team got solid opening rounds from seniors Jessica Peng and Ji Eun Baik to end Monday's first day of the Trinity Forest Invitational in 11th place.
Peng ended her day tied for 13th with a 76, while Baik headed to the clubhouse tied for 20th with a 77. Peng enters Tuesday's final round just two shots out of the Top 3.
The pair led the team to an opening-round 318, 11 shots out of the Top 5. Michigan grabbed the team lead with a 304, while Texas A&M's Bianca Fabrizio claimed the individual lead with a 71.
"It would be easy to get distracted with all of the delays, but coach made sure we didn't change our game," Peng said. "We just had to be patient and pay more attention to each hole."
Peng started her day with a birdie on her second hole, and managed to finish the round in difficult conditions with 11 pars over the rest of her round. Baik found the going tough her first nine holes, but she remained calm and played her final nine holes at 1-over.
Freshman Athena Yang finished the first round in a tie for 46th with an 81, while sophomore Katie Holt carded an 84 that placed her in a tie for 67th.
Teri Doss, another Bulldog rookie, ended Monday in 74th with an 87.
MSU will finish the tournament Tuesday with a shotgun start starting at 8:30 a.m. CT.
