Children's of Mississippi Kid Captain of the Week: Derrick James
October 05, 2016 | Football
Kid Captain is a partnership between Children's of Mississippi and the Mississippi State Bulldogs to honor pediatric patients and celebrate their inspirational stories. Their strength and determination reminds us how truly courageous these young people are. We are pleased to introduce this week's Children's of Kid Captain!
Derrick "DJay" James – Byram, MS
By all accounts DJay James is a normal fourth grader at Gary Road Intermediate School in Byram, but this 9-year-old has a problem most kids his age don't. DJay battles the chronic disease sickle cell anemia. Sickle cell anemia causes blood cells to take a sickle – rather than round – shape. The odd-shaped cells can cause blood clots, pain crises, and strokes. DJay is treated at the Children's Cancer Center where he receives blood transfusions every five weeks. DJay is fun-loving kid who enjoys playing guitar and basketball. He's also been known to have some serious moves on the dance floor. Mississippi State is proud to have DJay as the Children's of Mississippi Kid Captain for this week's game.
Children's of Mississippi is proud to have Christopher as the Kid Captain for this week's game.
