MSU Kicks Off Fall In Dominating Fashion Against Chipola
October 01, 2016 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Offensive firepower and stellar pitching was on full display Saturday afternoon at Nusz Park, as the Mississippi State softball Bulldogs dominated Chipola College in doubleheader action to open their fall season.
MSU opened up the day with an 8-1 victory, before shutting out Chipola in game two, 12-0.
The Dogs used an array of late-inning runs in both contests to fuel their impressive victories. Game one started slow until an RBI double from Alexis Silkwood put MSU on the board first. Chipola answered in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1, but it wouldn't be long for the Maroon and White made its big showing.
A Madison Cousineau triple led off the bottom of the fifth inning and sparked what would be a three-run inning for the Bulldogs. Kat Moore, Reggie Harrison and Taylor Kelly all drove in runs to push the State lead to 4-0. The bottom of the seventh saw the Dogs play four runs, with Harrison and Montana Davidson helping to plate runs, sealing the 8-1 win.
Game two started much like its predecessor, as it was quiet until State opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the third thanks to a Kat Moore RBI and a wild pitch that scored junior Bevia Robinson.
A Morgan Bell RBI would push the lead to 3-0 in the fifth before the flood gates opened in the sixth. The Dogs capitalized on a number of Chipola errors to plate a total of eight runs in the frame. State tacked on one more in the seventh to complete the 12-0 victory.
Holly Ward and Silkwood were the stars on the mound for both games, as both saw action in every inning. Ward allowed just one run on five hits while striking out three. Silkwood shut down Chipola in game two, allowing just six hits and fanning nine batters.
