AUBURN, Ala. - Mississippi State (3-1, 1-1 SEC) downed No. 25 Auburn (2-2, 0-2) 17-9 on Saturday night, defeating the Tigers on their home field for the first time in the Dan Mullen era.
"It feels good," Mullen said. "We're back where we want to be. We're back in the race."
The Bulldogs secured the victory through stingy red zone defense, holding Auburn to only six points in their four red zone trips, and another career day by senior quarterback Dak Prescott. State's signal-caller completed 29-of-41 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns while leading the Bulldogs to the important SEC West win.
MSU's defense has now only allowed two touchdowns in the last 11 quarters after keeping Auburn out of the end zone all night.
"I thought our defense played unbelievably well," Mullen said. "Lot of talented players on that Auburn team. Keeping them out of the end zone for the night was fantastic."
Defensively, MSU was once again paced by junior linebacker Richie Brown who had 13 tackles, while the Bulldog secondary only allowed Auburn 188 passing yards.
Mississippi State travels to No. 14 Texas A&M next Saturday with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. CT on the SEC Network. The Aggies held off Arkansas 28-21 in overtime Saturday night to move to 4-0 overall.
