Behind the play of senior All-American Ally McDonald and sophomore Ji Eun Baik Saturday at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course, the Bulldogs saved their best for last with a 299 to finish 12th at the NCAA Raleigh Regional with a three-day total of 300-306-299—905.
Unfortunately for MSU, only the top six advance to nationals.
However, that's not to take away from an unbelievable career for McDonald, who fired a 72 to finish 80-74-72—226 to place tied for for 35th. Also with a 72 was Baik, who finished a team-best tied for 22nd at 75-77-72—224.
Also playing in her final tournament for the Bulldogs was Rica Tse. After totaling a 78 on Saturday, she concluded play tied for 63rd at 75-79-78—232.
“We've had the best year in Mississippi State history,” said MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm, whose team recorded two team wins this historical season. “This week, this course was very challenging, as a regional should be. We gave it all we had, and we fell short. I couldn't be more proud of our two seniors, who helped change the culture of golf at Mississippi State. We will be training up to four freshmen next year, and we look for even more great things.”
Rounding out action for MSU were Jessica Peng and Blaise Carabello, who fired a 77 and 78, respectively. For the week, Peng finished tied for 30th at 72-76-77—225, while Carabello carded a 78-79-78—235 to finish tied for 75th in her first NCAA post-season event.
“It's disappointing that we won't be going to nationals, but I'm glad I could finish the way I did,” McDonald said. “This has been an amazing journey with the most amazing people. It's unbelievable how quickly these four years have gone by, but I am absolutely blessed to call every single one of these girls my family. Hail State forever!”
SEC foe South Carolina won the regional, followed by Northwestern. Rounding out the top six to advance were NN.C. State, LSU and Campbell.
Individually, LSU senior Madelene Sagstrom won the regional at 8-under par 208.
