RALEIGH, N.C. – A majority of Jessica Peng's best rounds typically fall on Day 2, but in the opening round of NCAA Regional on Thursday, the sophomore All-SEC standout paced Mississippi State with a 72.
Despite windy conditions throughout the day at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course, the Taiwan native shot even par on both the front and back and is tied for ninth.
As a team, MSU stands in 10th place with a 300. SEC foe LSU sits atop the standings after firing a 288.
“Jessica really managed herself well,” MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “Even with the wind at 20 mph on the back nine, she had it going.”
Rica Tse and Ji Eun Baik both shot a 75 and enter Friday's second round tied for 34th. Rounding out play for MSU were Blaise Carabello with a 78 (T67) and Ally McDonald at 80 (85).
For Carabello, a sophomore, it's her first NCAA event.
“Today was a total team effort,” Brown-Lemm said. “Jessica led in a strong way with her even par, followed by Rica and J.B. with a pair of 75s. Blaise rallied with three birdies and came through for us. And for the first time since her freshman year, Ally was plus-8. But it happens. This is a team of resilience, and we fully anticipate a great day tomorrow.”
