Silkwood Repeats As SEC Pitcher of the Week
April 06, 2015 | Softball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Continuing her stellar stretch that began 12 days ago, sophomore Alexis Silkwood was named Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time in as many weeks, the league office announced Monday.
Silkwood went 2-0 on the week with an ERA of 0.00 in 16 innings over appearances. Her two wins were complete-game shutouts and her third appearance was a save to set her stretch of scoreless innings pitched at 16. The East Alton, Ill. product allowed just six hits on the week and struck out 12.
"Wow I am so thankful for many blessings, this was earned with the hard work and dedication of a team that's more, we are family," Silkwood said. "I wouldn't want to be with anyone else out there on the field. Both the defense and offense are making plays and getting timely hits. Everyone's pulling on the rope. This is definitely a team award and honor. I am very thankful and proud to be a part of the Bulldog family! Hail State!"
This marks the sixth SEC weekly honor Silkwood has earned in her career and the second this season after having been named SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 30. Silkwood is the first pitcher in MSU history to be named SEC Pitcher of the Week twice in one season.
Silkwood went seven shutout innings at Lipscomb (March 31) and Arkansas (April 4) this week and allowed just two and three hits in each game, respectively.
Since throwing her first career no-hitter at Southern Miss on March 25, Silkwood is 4-1 with a 0.58 ERA in five complete games and three complete game shutouts.
"Silkwood is the definition of competitor," MSU head coach Vann Stuedeman said. "I am proud for her and our team. She truly believes in her teammates and that this is a team honor. This is a tough honor to receive because there are so many great pitchers in the league. Congratulations Silky!"
In the midst of her fourth season, Stuedeman has now had seven of her Bulldog pitchers receive SEC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Silkwood leads the SEC in wins (20) and innings pitched (154.0), while ranking second in the league in strikeouts (163).
State will retake the fielder later today at Arkansas in search of the three-game sweep. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.
