Softball Succumbs To No. 19 Texas A&M?s Late Rally

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Coming off Friday night's victory over No. 19 Texas A&M (21-6, 3-2 SEC), Mississippi State softball (19-6, 2-3 SEC) looked to clinch the series in Saturday's matchup, but ultimately fell, 10-8, after to a late rally at the MSU Softball Field.
“Our crowd was amazing today,” head coach Vann Stuedeman said. “I hate we couldn't pull through for them. It was a tough way to go down, but we had the winning run up to bat in the bottom of the seventh. Our fight in the seventh was excellent. The great thing about college softball is we get to get back out there tomorrow and I can't wait.”
After surrendering two runs to the Aggies in the top of the first, State answered with seven runs of their own. Sophomore Katie Anne Bailey and senior Julia Echols started the inning for the Bulldogs with back-to-back triples. Following RBIs from senior Erica Gaul and freshman Calyn Adams, sophomore Amanda Ivy smashed a grand slam over the right-center field wall. After one, MSU led 7-2.
Both TAMU and the Bulldogs added another run in the third inning, pushing the score to 8-3 after three. TAMU scored the final seven runs of the game, leaving the final score at 10-8.
Aggies senior pitcher Abby Donnell (1-0) earned her first win of the season. In 5.2 innings, she surrendered only three hits and one unearned run. She issued two walks, while striking out five.
Sophomore Alexis Silkwood (14-4) took the loss in relief for the Bulldogs. In one inning, she gave up three runs, all earned, struck out one and walked three.
Mississippi State will take on the Aggies in the Sunday rubber match of the series at 1 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcasted online on SEC Network+.
