Silkwood Has Career Night in 8-0 MSU Win
February 06, 2015 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – On a cold night, Mississippi State sophomore Alexis Silkwood provided a hot arm to help her side to a season-opening 8-0 win over Mississippi Valley State in six innings on Thursday night at the MSU Softball Stadium.
In the opening game of the 2015 Bulldog Kickoff Classic, Silkwood recorded a career-high 15 strikeouts, while allowing just one hit against the 19 batters she faced.
“It is always good to open the season on the winning end and that is what we did here tonight,” head coach Vann Stuedeman said. “I am proud of how we competed and hung in there. We didn't jump on them right away, but the girls trust in each other enough to know things will work out when they play together.”
MSU is now 27-1 all-time against MVSU and holds a 21-0 edge in Starkville. The Bulldogs have now won 19 straight in the sport against MVSU.
Caroline Seitz led off the bottom of the first inning with a double off the wall and with the assistance of a pass ball and a Loryn Nichols single, the Maroon and White took a 1-0 advantage and never looked back.
After Amanda Ivy reached second on an error in the second, Kayla Winkfield provided a sacrifice fly to bring Ivy home and put the Bulldogs up 2-0 while Silkwood continued to dominate from inside the circle.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Ivy lowered the boom with a grand slam to stretch the MSU lead to 6-0. A solo shot from Seitz led off the home half of the sixth and a single up the middle later in the inning gave Stuedeman's side a season-opening victory in six.
“We were pumped coming into the game and we had a lot of energy,” Ivy said. “We were prepared, we get in here a lot and work and we were just prepared for tonight.”
State will retake the field for day two of the event against Middle Tennessee on Friday with first pitch set for 5:35 p.m. The game will air live on SEC Network+.
