Jainudeen's Hat Trick Leads Bulldogs To 5-0 Win At Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – A Shannen Jainudeen hat trick was plenty of scoring for Mississippi State as it claimed a second-straight win with a 5-0 road victory at Arkansas State Friday afternoon.
The victory improved Mississippi State to 2-3 on the season, while Arkansas State fell to 1-3.
“We need to follow up Sunday's performance, and I felt like we did that. We were really good in front of goal today. Shannen Jainudeen finished a really good goal in the first half and added two more to get a hat trick which is really special,” MSU coach Aaron Gordon said. “We moved the ball well and finished some good chances which is good for us as we get ready for South Alabama and Louisiana Tech next weekend.”
Mississippi State managed to put just two chances on frame in the first half, but the Bulldogs made those two opportunities count as they took a 2-0 lead to halftime.
After heading in the golden goal on Sunday, Jainudeen opened her quest for the hat trick as she stole the ball in the 12th minute and banked in a shot off the post for her second goal of the season.
MSU extended the lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute as junior captain Shelby Jordan took a pass from Rhylee DeCrane at midfield and finished the breakaway for her first-career goal.
DeCrane kept the two-goal lead intact in the 28th minute as she made a diving stop of a Katey Carmichael point-blank attempt. A minute later she also denied an Ava Abner shot, one of five first-half saves for the freshman from Myrtle Beach, S.C.
DeCrane's night ended at halftime as newcomer Tanya de Souza took over between the posts and made an immediate stop on a Lauren Crimi breakaway in the 51st minute.
De Souza stopped three shots in the second half as the two keepers combined for the Bulldogs' first clean sheet of the year.
“We still have to work and tighten up some things on defense, but Rhylee (DeCrane) made two unbelievable saves in the first half and Tanya de Souza got her first minutes which will be valuable as we get ready for SEC play,” Gordon said.
Seconds after Darbi Filliben had an attempt on a free kick punched away by Sara Wicks, Jainudeen ran onto a deflection and found the back of the net for her second goal of the day that put the Dawgs in front 3-0.
Jainudeen completed the hat trick in the 64th minute as she took a pass from Jordan, spun around a defender and beat the ASU keeper to the left to put the Bulldogs ahead 4-0.
Jainudeen's hat trick is the first since Elisabeth Sullivan notched one last season against Jackson State.
State closed the scoring as two more Bulldog newcomers opened their accounts in the 86th minute. Freshman Katelyn Watson earned her first MSU assist as her deflection found sophomore Hannah Carroll for the one-timer, her inaugural MSU goal.
Mississippi State returns home next Friday to host South Alabama in a 7 p.m. first kick. The Dawgs stay on the home pitch Sunday, wrapping non-conference play against Louisiana Tech in a 1 p.m. contest that will be broadcast by SEC Network +.
