June 26, 2014 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – With the summer travel softball season in full swing, Mississippi State's student-athletes spent some time with HailState.com to discuss their starts in softball.
Loryn Nichols proved to be a key piece of Mississippi State's outfield during the 2014 season, playing in 56 games and starting 48, 32 in left field and 16 in center. The Murrieta, Calif., product turned in the team's fourth-best batting average (.278) and fifth-highest on-base percentage (.386) while leading the Bulldogs with 16 stolen bases. She finished the year with 27 hits and 23 runs scored to go along with 14 walks.
Q: How did you get started in softball?
A: My brother played baseball growing up and he was always asking me to throw with him and play baseball in the backyard. Between that and being at the field all weekend long, I just starting loving it and wanting to play myself.
Q: What was your first team's name?
A: My first softball team's name was the Teal Titans. I loved that uniform.
Q: What are some of your routines/superstitions on game day or during games?
A: Some routines or superstitions I have are always having ChapStick in my back pocket. That's really about it for me. Oh, and I put on left sock, right sock, left cleat and then right cleat.
Q: What is your favorite softball memory?
A: My favorite memory is making the softball team at a Southeastern Conference school after I had a coach tell me I was too small to play at any school.
Q: I wear my uniform number because:
A: I used to wear No. 25. I had been that number since I can remember. It had just always been my favorite. Now that I'm at Mississippi State I'm No. 10 because that was an option. No. 10 has now become my favorite because State gave it to me. That means a lot to me.
