Athletically Speaking With Caroline Seitz
June 17, 2014 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – With the summer travel softball season in full swing, Mississippi State's student-athletes spent some time with HailState.com to discuss their starts in softball.
Caroline Seitz was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-South Region First Team and the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman Team. The Birmingham, Ala., product was also selected as a Top 25 Finalist for the NFCA Freshman of the Year Award. Seitz topped the Bulldogs with a .340 batting average, 64 hits, 20 doubles, four triples, 116 total bases and a .617 slugging percentage during her rookie campaign.
Q: How did you get started in softball?
A: My dad played college baseball at the University of Texas (winning the 1983 NCAA National Championship) and then in the Atlanta Braves organization. He got me started playing.
Q: What was your first team's name?
A: I'm not sure the name of the first team, but it was T-ball with boys. They didn't offer T-ball for the girls at the time.
Q: What are some of your routines/superstitions on game day or during games?
A: I try not to have too many routines or superstitions during the season. I don't want that kind of stuff to get in my head. I want to keep it simple!
Q: What is your favorite softball memory?
A: As a freshman in high school I played with Julie Moss, who was a senior at the time and just finished her career at the University of South Alabama. Moss was hitting in front of me in the lineup and was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs. They wanted to pitch to me instead and I came up to clear the bases!
Q: If you could change one thing about softball, what would it be and why?
A: I wouldn't change a thing.
Q: I wear my uniform number because:
A: When I was younger I wore No. 30 because of Ken Griffey Jr., who is my all-time favorite player! When I changed teams, someone already had that number so I had to change. My dad was No. 51. That turned backwards is 15 and 15 is half of 30, so I went with it!
