
Decathlon Action Highlights Day One Of SEC Outdoors For MSU

LEXINGTON, Ky. -Â A freshman represented the Mississippi State track and field team on Thursday as the 2014 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships kicked off at the Kentucky Track and Field Complex.
JaQuarius Wilson saw action in the men's decathlon, completing five of the ten events in their championships debut.
"I'm pleased with how the newcomer started out the weekend for us," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "I'm excited to see how he finishes tomorrow, and I'm glad he can get this experience under his belt."
Wilson started off the competition by grabbing 728 points in the 100-meter dash at 11.62. His leap of 21-04.75 in the long jump earned him another 702 points before tossing 31-04.75 in the shot put. To finish the competition on day one, Wilson cleared 6-00.50 in the high jump and ran a 51.66 in the 400-meter dash to total 3,291 points.
Wilson will conclude decathlon action tomorrow with the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500-meter run. Friday's competition begins at noon ET.
Still to come on day two, MSU will also compete in the men's and women's 800-meter run, men's and women's 200-meter dash, men's and women's 400-meter hurdles, and the men's 10000-meter run.
