March 21, 2014 | Track & Field
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – To open its outdoor campaign, the Mississippi State track and field team saw two freshmen compete in the men's decathlon competition on Thursday as day one of the John Mitchell Alabama Relays began at Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium.
The duo, comprised of Carl Pittman and JaQuarius Wilson, set the bar high on the first day of action with top finishes in the first five of ten events.
"Both of these guys proved they can hang with the veterans," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "I'm looking forward to having the rest of the team arrive tomorrow. These squads really thrive off of each other's support."
With a first-place leap in the long jump, Wilson (22-01.00) gave MSU its second-straight win in the competition before heading into the shot put. There, he posted the best Bulldog score with a toss of 36-04.00 to finish fifth. Wilson earned 3,350 points on Thursday, donning another strong effort from the young group.
Pittman's best performances on day one came on the track as he finished ninth in the 400-meter dash (51.78) and 11th in the 100-meter dash (11.76). He collected 2,836 points through five events in his outdoor debut.
The Alabama Relays will continue tomorrow at 10 a.m. as the men's decathlon competition continues with the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500-meter run.
Still to come, nearly 50 Bulldogs will see action in 30 events over the remainder of the three-day event.
