Soccer Ends Season With 3-0 Setback At No. 20 South Carolina
October 31, 2014 | Soccer
The young Bulldogs found the going tough against one of the nation's best defenses en route to ending the campaign 3-15 overall, 0-11 in the SEC.
“We're disappointed our season ends in October. However, after 20 games with 20 freshmen I think we made progress,” Gordon said. “We're looking forward to building on what we learned this season and work on those things during the spring. We'll try to get stronger and faster and use this experience to enhance our team.”
MSU was held to three shots in the contest, with senior Shannen Jainudeen creating two of those opportunities, including the Bulldogs' lone on-goal chance.
That lone chance came in the fourth minute. Off a South Carolina turnover, Mallory Eubanks dribbled down the right and crossed to Jainudeen.
The Scarbrough, Ontario, native settled the ball, but USC keeper Sabrina D'Angelo come off her line and knocked the ball away before Jainudeen could get the shot off.
South Carolina answered in the 12th minute, netting the winner from the top of the 18 off a Lindsey Lane shot that snuck inside the left post past freshman Tanya de Souza.
The Gamecocks took a 2-0 advantage to halftime after Sophie Groff put one under the crossbar in the 18th minute.
De Souza, seeing her first action since Oct. 3, kept the deficit at 2-0 as she made three saves in the final eight minutes of the opening half.
The Gamecocks added the final advantage five minutes into the opening half as Savannah McCaskill put a Chelsea Drennan service low past MSU freshman Rhylee DeCrane.
The Myrtle Beach, S.C., native kept the Gamecocks off the board the rest of the way, making three of her four saves in the final 40 minutes of the game.
