Soccer Falls At Texas A&M In SEC Road Opener

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Mississippi State's young soccer team had a tough SEC road opener Friday night, falling 8-0 to Texas A&M at Ellis Field in College Station.
MSU fell to 3-6 overall, 0-2 in the young league season with the difficult defeat. The Aggies improved to 6-3-1 overall, 1-1 in SEC action.
The Bulldogs will try to rebound on Sunday as they head to Baton Rouge to face LSU in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
The Aggies struck the deciding goal 28 seconds in, as Allie Bailey netted a loose ball off a Karlie Mueller free kick.
State responded with a corner kick off the ensuing kickoff. Shelby Jordan's service was batted around in the box before settling on the foot of Halee Heltsley, but her equalizing opportunity sailed just high of target.
Minutes later Texas A&M extended the lead as Shea Groom scored the first of her two goals in the contest.
The Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on a free kick opportunity at the edge of the 18-yard box that would have cut the deficit to a goal. Aggie goalkeeper Jordan Day was called for a handball violation, but Dana Forbes' ensuing free kick deflected off a Texas A&M defender on the wall.
Meghan Streight headed in two more goals and Ana Cruz added another as the Aggies went to halftime in front 5-0.
The Bulldogs created some attacking opportunities in the second half, but were unable to connect the final pass on a windy night in the team's first-ever trip to College Station.
Groom headed in her second goal of the contest to open the second half, and Annie Kunz and Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar capped the scoring with goals in the 78th and 87th minutes.
TAMU claimed a 30-8 shots advantage in the contest. Senior CJ Winship made two saves for State in the first half, while freshman Meara Johnson tallied four stops over the final 45 minutes.
