McDonald Tied for Lead, MSU Drops to Second Place in Cougar Classic
September 10, 2013 | Women's Golf
HANAHAN, S.C. – Despite difficult pin positions on Monday, the Mississippi State women's golf team finished Monday's second round of the Cougar Classic in second place while all-American Ally McDonald carded an even-par round to sit tied for the individual lead.
Despite the challenging hole locations, the Bulldogs followed an opening-round 282 with a 291 on Monday to sit at 3-under for the tournament, six shots back of leader Clemson.
“Today was a grind. Nothing came easy to us,” head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “I am proud of the ladies as they showed maturity by staying in their routines and making pars.”
McDonald struggled with four bogeys in the first five holes on the back nine, but composed herself to notch a birdie-par-par-birdie to close the day at even-par 72. The all-American is tied for the top spot with Clemson's Sloan Shanahan at 6-under 138.
Searching for her first top-10 finish since her freshman season, Mary Langdon Gallagher followed a career-low 69 on Sunday with a 2-over 74 to sit tied for ninth at 1-under-par 143.
Rica Tse made a two-shot improvement from Sunday and posted the squad's lowest round with a 1-under-par 71 round. Tse started brightly with a birdie on the second hole, and she capped the round with back-to-back birdies on the final two holes to end the day tied for 16th.
Freshman Jessica Peng struggled in her debut in the first round but made a strong turn around Monday as she shot a 2-over-par 74. After carding an eagle on the 18th hole Sunday, she birdied the hole Monday. Fellow freshman Ji Eun Baik capped the MSU lineup with a 79 that put her at 9-over-par 153.
Third-round action will begin at 8:00 a.m. CST Tuesday, with MSU set to tee off in the final group alongside Clemson, N.C. State and host College of Charleston.
