Sullivan Sets Season Goals Record In Setback To Rebels
October 31, 2013 | Soccer
OXFORD, Miss. – With just over a minute to play in her final match, senior Elisabeth Sullivan set the MSU single-season goals record as the Bulldogs fell to Ole Miss 5-1 on a wet Halloween Night in Oxford.
Sullivan struck her 16th goal of the season in the 89th minute on a breakaway opportunity. Shannen Jainudeen found freshman Annebel ten Broeke, who then turned and played an excellent service to Sullivan for the breakaway past UM keeper Brianna Supulski.
“It was fitting that with two minutes to play in her final game, Elisabeth Sullivan scored another great goal that made her the all-time leading goal scorer for Mississippi State soccer,” Bulldog head coach Aaron Gordon said. “Ole Miss did a great job on her tonight, but she showed that she is one of the best goal-scorers in the SEC. Annebel made a great pass to set up the goal, and Elisabeth scored against a player who had done a tremendous job on her most of the match.”
For Sullivan, it wrapped a tremendous Bulldog career that saw her also set the Mississippi State standards for career goals (39), points (92), game-winning assists (8) and multiple-goal games (8).
Sullivan's record-setting goal capped a tough night that saw the Bulldogs finish the season 3-15-0, 0-11-0 in SEC play. The Rebels improved to 14-4-2, 7-3-1 in league action.
"We'll be back. We are going to learn from our experience in 2013, and we are going to get better," Gordon said.
Ole Miss claimed a slim 6-5 edge in on-goal chances, but was efficient with those chances.
Rafaelle Souza staked Ole Miss to a 2-0 halftime lead after the Bulldogs had chances from ten Broeke and Sullivan turned back by Rebel goalkeeper Kelly McCormick.
Ole Miss extended the lead on two goals from Mandy McCalla and another by Addie Forbus before Sullivan broke through with the record-setting strike.
State goalie CJ Winship claimed one save in her final match.
