October 18, 2013 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. – Mississippi State found the going tough Friday night as the Bulldogs fell 5-0 to Georgia in SEC soccer action at the UGA Soccer Stadium.
Mississippi State fell to 3-11 overall and 0-7 in SEC play heading into a 1 p.m. Sunday contest at Vanderbilt that will be televised by Comcast Sports Southeast.
State found the scoring chances tough early on as UGA (10-4-1, 3-3-1 SEC) out-shot the Bulldogs 13-3 in the first half and 21-7 overall.
Marion Crowder put Georgia in front in the 8th minute, and just under two minutes later Madeline Barker put one beneath MSU goalie CJ Winship to put the host Bulldogs in front 2-0.
Georgia took a 4-0 advantage to halftime as Cara Smith scored on a misplayed clearance and Nikki Hill fired one to the top corner from 25 yards out.
State nearly got a goal back in the 24th minute off a Shannen Jainudeen breakaway, but the Scarbrough, Ontario, native's attempt was broken up by Georgia keeper Caitlin Woody.
Barker added her second goal of the night in the 54th minute to put UGA up 5-0.
State kept fighting, though, and senior Elisabeth Sullivan punched one through to Jainudeen in the 63rd minute for a shot that sailed just past a diving Woody and outside the left post.
Sullivan tried to score one of her own past Woody in the 78th minute on a breakaway, but the Georgia goalie dove and blocked her attempt and a Halee Heltsley follow-up.
Winship registered six saves in the contest, while Woody turned away all four of MSU's on-goal opportunities.Team Stats
