Lady Bulldogs Kick Off Season with Program's Fifth-Best First Round
September 10, 2012 | Women's Golf
"Fantastic start to our season," MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "We had a strong team effort today. To be playing with programs ranked in the top 30 and be only three shots back of second is an incredibly inspiring place to be."
"The Waverly" is MSU's first regular season home golf event hosted at the par-72, 6,204-yard Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point.
Tulane stormed off of the tee box with a 2-over-par 290 to lead the field. Green Wave Sophomore Gemma Dryburgh leads but all individuals with an impressive 3-under-par 69.
SEC-foes Arkansas and No. 23 Kentucky are each just three strokes ahead of the Maroon and White.
Sophomore Rica Tse paced the Lady Bulldogs with a 1-over-par 73 on Monday. The New Zealand-native took advantage of two birdie opportunities on par-3's on the front nine, and delivered a birdie on the par-5 15th.
Fresh off her stellar freshman campaign, Ally McDonald posted a 2-over-par 74. In her career debut, Gabi Oubre' matched McDonald's 74. Mary Langdon Gallagher fell just two strokes behind the duo with a 76, while Elena Warren rounded out the MSU leaderboard with an 81.
Competing as an individual, freshman Logan Chaney notched a 4-over-par 76 and is just outside the Top 25.
Second-round action begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday with the Lady Bulldogs set to tee off on No. 1. 30 minutes prior to the second round, a 9/11 tribute will be held around the 18th green.
"(Tuesday) is a new day, and we left several shots on the golf course," Brown-Lemm recalled. "We fully anticipate a strong second round so we can put ourselves in position to win the tournament."
Admission to "The Waverly" is free, and all fans are invited to support the MSU golf program in its first home event.
"It was energizing to see our administration, staff and other sports represented in the gallery today." Brown-Lemm said. "Having our community and members of Old Waverly support our team is inspiring."
