Mississippi State Moves Forward on SEC Championships Day Two

"Our athletes continued their hard work on day two," coach Steve Dudley said. "They competed with a great effort and I am looking forward to seeing where we will go if we keep this momentum going."
Picking up the Lady Bulldogs' first top five finish and five team points was Favian Cowards. The senior's day was slightly delayed due to weather, but after the rain clouds cleared Cowards found her focus and posted a fourth place throw of 188-02 in the hammer throw.
Erica Bougard picked up the second top five finish as she placed fourth in the heptathlon with 5,537 points. Bougard's fourth place finish came on the heels of the freshman winning both the long jump (20-00.50) and the 800-meter run (2:14.16); and earned Bougard a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team, as well as earning five points for the Lady Bulldogs.
Day one's heptathlon featured both Bougard and teammate Keisha Wallace, but after an injury in the long jump Wallace was forced to remove herself from day two's competition.
Jodie McGuff closed out the day for the Lady Bulldogs as she finished eighth in the 10,000-meter run (37:13.20), earning one point for the team.
Continuing action from Thursday was Trevarus Christian who picked up an eighth place finish in the decathlon by scoring a total of 4414 points. Christian's eighth place finish earned the first point of the meet for the Bulldogs.
Emanuel Mayers, who missed last year's SEC Championships because of injury, laced up next for the Bulldogs. Proving he was completely over his injury and back to his old self, Mayers ran 50.46 to finish first in the 400-meter hurdles prelims and secure a spot in Sunday's finals. Nathan Arnett joined Mayers in the 400-meter hurdles and will also be joining him in the finals as he placed fourth with a time of 51.04.
At the end of day two the Lady Bulldogs find themselves in fifth place (11 points) overall, while the Bulldogs stand at eighth after Christian's lone point.
Maroon and White action on day three will get underway at 2:45 p.m. with reigning SEC Outdoor Champion Rochelle Farquharson in the long jump, and will conclude at 7:05 p.m. with John Valentine in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
