Bulldogs Complete Day 2 Of The Penn Relays
April 27, 2012 | Track & Field
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Improvement was the goal of Mississippi State when it began action on Day Two of the Penn Relays, and improve it did picking up 13 Top 25 finishes, including three Top Fives.
"I always tell our athletes that you can't measure success by how you stack up against others," coach Steve Dudley said. "Instead you measure by how you stand compared to where you, personally, were yesterday. For us we are performed better today than yesterday. Now we just have to continue that improvement into the final day of competition."
A pair of hurdlers led the way for the Bulldogs as Emanuel Mayers (51.51) picked up the highest finish of the day. Mayers placed third in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing seconds ahead of teammate Nathan Arnett (52.11) who was seventh.
Jarrett Samuels and Ed Wesela rounded out the Top 5 finishes, with Samuels (25-2) taking fourth in the long jump and Wesela (56-2.75) coming in fifth in the shot put. Wesela picked up a second Top 25 finish as he threw 155-3 to finish 18th in the discus throw.
Samuels also picked up more Top 25 finishes as the freshman joined his teammates in a couple of relay events. First Samuels joined Daundre Barnaby, Randy Patterson and Steve Shoto to finish 13th in the Sprint Medley Championship of America (3:26.63), before joining Justin Christian, D'Angelo Cherry and James Harris to place 23rd in the 4x100-meter relay (41.41).
Cherry then struck out on his own to close the Maroon and White individual competition as he ran 11:49 to place 17th in the 100-meter dash.
Bulldog competition on day two commenced with the running of the 4x400-meter relay heats, where Harris, Mayers, Barnaby and Tavaris Tate posted the sixth fastest time of 3:10.41 to qualify for Saturday's Championship of America race.
The Lady Bulldogs competed in three events and in each event that posted a Top 25 finish. Ebony Brinker started things off for the women as she posted a tenth best 39-10.75 in the triple jump. Following Brinker was a pair of hurdlers as Racquel Farquharson (13.80) and Keisha Wallace (13.84) finished 13th and 15th in the 100-meter hurdles.
Farquharson joined teammates Erica Bougard, Jody-Ann Muir and Kanishia Carey to close out the MSU women's day two competition by running 4:04.42 to finish 23rd in the Sprint Medley Championship of America.
"Our athletes competed with a purpose today," Dudley stated. "Now they need to focus themselves and prepare for the last day of competition. We want to end this meet on a high note. The atmosphere will be electric tomorrow and we need to match that with an equally electrifying performance."
Jason Harper will lead things off for the Maroon and White on day three, as he competes in the triple jump at 9 a.m. (EST).
