Softball Looks To Keep Winning Tuesday Vs. Memphis

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Riding its longest non-conference winning streak in over four years, the Mississippi State softball team (28-19) will host 2011 NCAA Tournament participant Memphis (19-33) Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest at the MSU Softball Stadium. The Bulldogs have won nine-consecutive games against opponents outside the Southeastern Conference, their longest stretch since the 2008 squad won 12 in a row.
The Twitter Tuesday tilt is a rematch of MSU's 9-6 victory against Memphis on Feb. 12 in Mobile, Ala. On the final day of the Mardi Gras Invitational, the Maroon and White erased a 4-1 sixth-inning deficit with an eight spot in the sixth stanza. The rally was sparked by a two-out, three-run double by pinch-hitter Chrissie Rovtar. In the circle, junior left-hander Kylie Vry was dominant, striking out four of the seven batters she faced for her first save of the 2012 campaign.
State is currently led in the circle by junior southpaw Stephanie Becker, who was named SEC Softball Pitcher of the Week Monday. Becker was the only SEC pitcher to pick up three league victories this past week, going a perfect 3-0 against 2011 Super Regional squad Kentucky for Mississippi State's first series sweep vs. UK since 2008. The Chicago native finished the weekend with a 2.15 ERA and an impressive 15-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Offensively, the Bulldog bats are anchored by a trio of All-SEC candidates in Brittany Bell, Jessica Cooley and Ka'ili Smith. Bell is second in the SEC in on-base percentage (.544), fourth in slugging percentage (.694) and fifth in batting average (.379). Cooley is third in the conference in home runs (13), while also ranking in the top 10 in slugging percentage (8th, .644) and total bases (T-9th, 85). Smith, last week's SEC Player of the Week, ranks in the top 10 in six different categories (batting average, runs, doubles, hits, walks and on-base percentage).
Prior to Tuesday's game, Jordan Box from French Camp, Miss., will perform the national anthem. Previous Twitter Tuesday winner Meagan Dabbs from Armory, Miss., will throw out the first pitch. As always, softball aficionados will have the chance to win a Vanntastic t-shirt with every extra-base hit, win prizes via Bulldog Bingo and win movie tickets with movie trivia.
Following its game against the Tigers Tuesday, Starkville's Team travels to Hattiesburg Wednesday for a 6 p.m. matchup at in-state foe Southern Miss at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
