Lady Bulldogs Tied For Eighth After Round One Of SEC Championship
April 20, 2012 | Women's Golf
The Lady Bulldog's 315 card is only six strokes back of a Top 5 finish. The team is currently tied with 24th-ranked South Carolina.
MSU is looking to finish the season on a roll, which has already produced back-to-back Top 10 finishes entering the weekend.
If MSU can hold its current spot on the leaderboard, it will be the program's best finish at the conference championship since finishing tied for fifth in 2000.
Freshman standout Ally McDonald paced the Lady Bulldogs in round one with a 5-over-par 77, even after stumbling to begin the round. Through three holes, the Fulton native was 5-over but managed to post par for the remaining 15 holes.
Fellow freshman Elena Warren trailed McDonald by one stroke with a 78. She posted a double bogey and triple bogey on her first two holes before settling down and finishing only 4-over for the last 16 holes.
Sophomore Mary Langdon Gallagher's 79 came in third on the Maroon and White leaderboard. Rica Tse and Perry Katherine Furr rounded out MSU's day with an 81 and 83, respectively.
"Today was a good day mentally for us," MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "We only focused on our game plan. The fact that it was 48 degrees and windy, didn't waive our commitment to one shot at a time. There were mistakes and missed shots but we didn't let it get us down. With our three freshmen, one sophomore and one senior, to be tied for 8th is an accomplishment. This golf course is the most difficult course in the collegiate circuit. While 8th is great for our team after today, we are focused on continuing to stick with our game plan. Each girl knows they left a few shots out there today, and each is determined to make better decisions and score lower tomorrow."
Live stats will be available through HailState.com for each round. Second-round action is slated to tee off at 8:30 a.m. CST with MSU teeing off on hole 12 at 9:20.
