August 26, 2011 | Soccer
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Mississippi State was unable to overcome two opening-half goals as UC Riverside opened its home slate with a 3-0 victory Friday evening in the opening game of the UC Riverside Women's Soccer Invitational in Riverside, Calif.
The Dawgs fell to 0-2-0 on the year, while the Highlanders improved to 1-1-1 with the win.
UCR out-shot Mississippi State 19-6, including a 12-5 edge in on-goal chances. Junior Jasmine Simmons paced the Bulldogs with three total shots. The Oklahoma City native put two of those efforts between the posts.
Junior goalkeeper Skylar Rosson ended the night with nine saves.
State's first opportunity came with 29:20 left in the opening half. Morganne Grimes put a touch to Elisabeth Sullivan along the right side. Sullivan then put a pass into Simmons, but she was unable to angle the ball past UCR goalkeeper Jessica Olafsen, who ended the night with five stops.
The Highlanders claimed the early 1-0 lead as Aaren Casimiro hit a shot from 35 yards off a pass from Deborah Musa in the 28th minute.
Musa extended the UC Riverside advantage to 2-0 two minutes later. UCR sent the corner kick past the far post, and Lindsey Ahmed headed it back to Musa in the middle for the score.
The Bulldogs were unable to convert on a pair of chances in the opening half's final two minutes. Sullivan used her speed to break through the defense, but her final touch carried too far and Olafsen came out to claim it.
Seconds later senior Kim Pettit fired a shot from 25 yards that Olafsen managed to corral.
With just seconds remaining in the opening half, UCR's Andrea Morales had a clean chance on goal, but Rosson made a spectacular save on the 1-v.-1 situation to hold the UCR lead at 2-0 going to halftime.
UCR out-shot the Dawgs 12-3 in the opening half, but managed only a 6-3 edge in on-goal opportunities.
With 23 minutes remaining in the second half, Simmons lined a ball into the box to Henderson. The Martinez, Ga., native was unable to get a foot on it as Olafsen made the save.
Five minutes later, senior Serena Prendergast directed a ball to the near post, but Olafsen once again made the stop.
UCR added its third goal in the 79th minute. Rosson came out to try and corral a loose ball just inside the 18-yard box, but Morales managed to boot a shot past her into the net.
Rosson turned back another breakaway opportunity by Riverside with four minutes left. Vanessa Ybarra broke through the defense, but Rosson booted the ball away before she could take the shot.
The Bulldogs wrap their California trip Sunday, taking on No. 13 UC Irvine at noon CT at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
