Thornton Leads Surging Lady Bulldogs In Round Two Of Rebel Intercollegiate
April 02, 2011 | Women's Golf
OXFORD, Miss. – Senior Erika Thornton used four birdies to fire a 2-under par 70 and lead the Mississippi State women's golf team as they surged four spots in the Rebel Intercollegiate during the second round.
Thornton's card was the third-best score of the second round, and it boosted her into a tie for 15th. She is only three strokes behind the top 5.
“I was very consistent throughout the entire day,” she said. “I hit some good iron shots that produced easy birdies. Hopefully a few more putts will fall tomorrow, and we will finish in the top 10.”
Bettering the team score by 11 strokes, the Lady Bulldogs concluded play in a 12th-place tie with Memphis, just two strokes out of the top 10.
Senior Mallory Batson turned in a 75 on Saturday and is tied for 51st, while freshman Esther Huffman's 77 was third best on the Maroon and White squad. Junior Perry Katherine Furr and freshman Mary Langdon Gallagher both carded 81's for the round.
MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm missed the second round with an illness. Assistant coach Leigh Phillips guided the team through the Ole Miss Golf Course.
“Today was a better day on the golf course for us,” Phillips said. “Erika (Thornton) and Mallory (Batson) stepped up as seniors and led the girls to a better round. As a team, we need to sustain our improvement. Being only three shots out of 9th, we look forward to a good round tomorrow to propel us to our goal of a top-10 finish.”
The Tennessee Lady Volunteers maintained the tournament lead totaling a 7-under par 569 thus far. Lady Volunteer Kathalle Mansson sits atop the field individually with a 5-under par 139.
Third-round action at the Rebel Intercollegiate will begin with an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start Sunday. Live stats will be available through www.mstateathletics.com.
