Women's Golf Completes Sir Pizza Cards Challenge

WESTON, Fla. – The final round of the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge concluded on Tuesday afternoon at the Weston Hills Golf Course in Weston, Fla., with the Mississippi State women's golf team firing a team-best round for the tournament 308. The Lady Bulldogs carded a 936 for tournament landing the team just nine strokes out of a top-10 finish.
For the third day in a row, MSU's pair of seniors led the way.
Erika Thornton fired a 72 on the day, her best round of the tournament and finished tied for twelfth overall. Fellow senior Mallory Batson finished with a 76 in the final round. She, too, managed a top-20 finished and is anxious to keep improving.
“Overall, I am pleased with how I played this weekend,” she said. “This is our first tournament of the spring so it was a great feeling to come out with a solid, consistent performance. I will keep improving and carry this momentum into our next tournament.”
A pair of 80's were carded by sophomore Maria Roos and junior Perry Katherine Furr. Roos finishes the tournament with a total 244 strokes while Furr followed her with a 245.
Freshman Mary Langdon Gallagher notched an 82 in the final round and finsished just one stroke behind Furr with a 246.
Coach Ginger Brown-Lemm knows the lady linksters underperformed this in the tournament but knows her team's play will improve.
“We certainly showed the rust that builds up in the off season,” she said. “The double and triple bogeys killed us in tournament. We cannot compete in the SEC with the numbers we posted. It also hurt having our number three golfer, Esther Huffman, out with injury. Our seniors played very well, and I'm proud of their dedication in the offseason, which showed with their performances. We need our underclassmen to step up.”
Mississippi State will return to action on Friday, March 11, in the LSU Golf Classic at the LSU Golf Course in Baton Rouge, La.
