McDonald Rebounds, Posts 1-Under-Par 71 In Round Two
October 22, 2011 | Women's Golf
Competing against one of the fiercest fields in collegiate golf, the Fulton native used a team-high four birdies to pull within two strokes of a Top 25 finish.
"Ally McDonald had the round of the day with a 71," MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "She did a good job of refocusing after yesterday and playing her game."
The star-studded field features 15 of Golf Stat's Top 25 teams in the nation, as well as seven of the Top 10 players.
Collectively, the Lady Bulldogs carved seven strokes off their first-day total to post a 310 and help the SEC take control of the conference competition. After two rounds, the SEC average team score is 598.17 while the PAC-12 is at 600.64.
Sixth-ranked Alabama used a 2-over-par 290 to overtake No. 1 UCLA for the overall tournament lead at 2-under with 18 holes remaining.
Individually, Stephanie Meadow of Alabama maintained her spot atop the leaderboard while Nathalie Mansson of Tennessee joined her at 5-under through 36.
After leading MSU in round one, freshman Rica Tse found herself second on the Maroon and White leaderboard with a 5-over 77.
Sophomore Mary Langdon Gallagher and senior Perry Katherine Furr chiseled six and two strokes of their first-round totals to post a 79 and 83, respectively. Freshman Elena Warren's 85 rounded out the Lady Bulldogs day.
"We played better today," said Brown-Lemm. "We just haven't been able to finish very well. We were 10-over on the last three holes as a team; that kills you. We simply cannot do that. Rica had a 77 but couldn't get the speed on her first putts. We were able to isolate some movement though. I expect us to come to tomorrow and battle during the final round"
Round three begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. CST Sunday. Mississippi State is paired with Washington State and Kentucky.
