Gallagher Leads Surging Lady Bulldogs In Final Round

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Freshman Mary Langdon Gallagher led the surging Mississippi State women's golf team in the final round of the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic in Greensboro, N.C., on Tuesday, firing a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 7th-place finish, five spots better than where the team entered play at on Tuesday.
The 298 stroke total posted by the lady linksters in the final round was the best score for a round since the Canes and Cardinal Classic in 2008, and the 7th-place finish is the best place for MSU since the Johnie Imes Invitational also in 2008.
Finishing just behind Gallagher on the day was senior Erika Thornton at 149, just one stroke away from a Top 10 finish. Fellow senior Mallory Batson also garnered a Top 20 finish with a two-day total of 152. With a 4-over-par 76 in the final round, freshman Esther Huffman managed to tie with Gallagher for 41st in the tournament field. Junior Perry Katherine Furr finished just behind Huffman and Gallagher at 159.
First-year coach Ginger Brown-Lemm was excited with the strides the Lady Bulldogs made in the final round.
“It was a great day for Mississippi State women's golf,” she said. “We were very determined on the course today. To have to drop a 76 in a round is a huge move in the right direction. We cannot wait to get back on the course for our next tournament."
Mississippi State's women's golf team returns to action on Mon, Oct. 11 at the Prices Give 'Em Five Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M.
