MSU Soccer Falls 2-0 at Alabama
September 26, 2010 | Soccer
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Mississippi State's soccer team put up a valiant fight Sunday afternoon, but came up short in a 2-0 setback to Alabama at the UA Soccer Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The loss dropped head coach Neil Macdonald's squad to 7-4 overall and 0-2 in SEC play. Alabama improved to 2-0 in the league, 7-2 on the season.
“I was really disappointed in the performance overall today. We didn't take responsibility and hold each other accountable out there today,” Bulldog coach Neil Macdonald said. “We played better in the second half, but to win games on the road at this level you have to be highly disciplined and work as a unit. We did neither of those things.”
After being out-shot in the opening half, State came roaring back in the final stanza, firing six more shots than UA. Despite matching Alabama with eight on-goal attempts, however, the Dawgs were unable to find the back of the net.
Both teams battled to a stalemate in the first half, but Alabama struck in the 54th minute with a Kendall Khanna goal.
The Bulldogs' Elisabeth Sullivan just missed the equalizer in the 73rd minute as her shot toward the top shelf was tipped by Bernier over the crossbar.
A minute later, the Bulldogs switched the ball to the right side to junior Tarah Henderson, but the Martinez, Ga., native's shot carried to the left of the goal.
Henderson paced MSU with six shots in the match.
Alabama extended the lead to 2-0 in the 81st minute as Brooke Rogers put a Victoria Frederick pass past Rosson.
Rosson made six stops on the afternoon, while Bernier finished the match with eight saves.
Despite the deficit, the Bulldogs kept fighting. Sullivan flicked a pass to Kim Pettit with three minutes left, but the junior's attempt went just wide of the goal.
State wraps a season-long road trip next weekend, traveling to Florida on Friday and South Carolina on Sunday for a match that will be televised by Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast.
