
MSU Track Teams Have Big Day At SEC Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Weather continued to be a major player at the 2010 SEC Outdoor Championships Saturday in Knoxville. However once again it did not seem to faze the Mississippi State men's and women's track team. On their third day at Tom Black Track at La Porte Stadium MSU collected all SEC performances and qualified for key event finals.
After a weather delay of more than two hours MSU sprinters Tavaris Tate, O'Neal Wilder and Dwight Mullings collected three qualifying spots for the 400-meter dash. Tate had the day's fastest time, 45.65 seconds, while Wilder and Mullings brought in the fourth (46.24) and eighth (46.54) best.
Junior Emanuel Mayers ran 14.43 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles to qualify for his second event final. Mayers will compete in both the 110- and 400-meter hurdle finals Sunday.
Freshman Lady Bulldog Jody-Ann Muir remained unaffected by the weather winning her 400-meter dash preliminary heat. The Jamaican product ran a personal-best 52.95 seconds to enter the finals with the fourth best time.
In the 100-meter hurdle prelim freshman Keisha Wallace ran 13.60 seconds have the fifth fastest time of the day and qualify for the event final.
MSU also fared well in the field events as both Wendy Copeland and Ed Weslea had Top 8 finishes in their respective events. Copeland jumped 20 feet, 10 inches to finish second in the long jump, while Weslea threw 54-08 to finish fourth in the shot put.
MSU begins competition on their final day in Knoxville at 1:30 p.m. in the field events, and at 4:00 p.m. on the track with chances to collect valuable points to ensure high team finishes.
