Jessie Bailey Named to SEC Community Service Team

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State senior third baseman Jessie Bailey has been named to the Southeastern Conference’s Softball Community Service Team that was announced by the league office Tuesday evening.
The honor comes just days after the Lithonia, Ga., native closed a career year on the field and earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District VI accolades.
“We are very proud of everything Jessie has accomplished in her career. This is another great honor for her in her senior year,” Bulldog head coach Jay Miller said. “She does a great job of getting not only herself involved in the community, but her teammates as well. It’s nice to see her hard work recognized by the SEC.”
Bailey's selection comes a year after her sister, Sammie Jo, was named to the team.
Bailey has been an active member in Mississippi State’s M-Club student-athlete service organization all four years. She has been a regular reader to area students through the Bully’s Book Blitz program, and she has helped raise awareness about drugs in the community schools. She has also helped with the SEC’s “Together We Can” Food Drive and distributed food to underprivileged families during the Thanksgiving holiday. An annual participant in Mississippi State’s Fall Festival, Bailey has also helped raise clothes donations for the local clothes closet.
A regular instructor in Mississippi State’s softball camps, she has been involved with campus and community trash pick-ups throughout her four years in Starkville. Bailey helped with the painting of paw prints on the MSU campus streets, and she has been involved with organizing a volleyball camp for high school students.
Even with the extensive time spent in the community and on the softball field, Bailey graduated with honors in May after winning the Newsome Award for the top grade-point average on the softball team. Earlier this week, she received her first Academic All-District first-team accolade after being selected to the second team the past two seasons. Bailey is on track to finish her career with four-straight SEC Academic Honor Roll and NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete selections.
The academic and community service honors cap a senior season that saw her post a career-high .296 batting average and a team second-most 11 doubles. Her personal-best doubles tally moved her into a tie for ninth with 29 career two-baggers. The standout third baseman finished her tenure at the hot corner tied for fifth all-time with 444 career assists.
