STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Mississippi State softball team looks to build on the momentum of a doubleheader sweep of Auburn when it hosts No. 5/6 Florida Saturday and Sunday in a three-game Southeastern Conference series at the MSU Softball Field.
The series opens Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Fans are asked to wear Maroon to Saturday's twinbill, and former Bulldog players will be recognized between games as part of Alumni Day festivities.
Sunday's final game is set for a 12 p.m. first pitch and will be televised on SportSouth. The Dawgs will sport pink jerseys as part of the team's StrikeOut Cancer efforts.
Head coach Jay Miller's squad comes into the series with a 26-24 overall record and 7-15 SEC mark after sweeping Auburn last Wednesday. MSU sits just back of AU in the race for the final spot in the upcoming SEC Tournament that will be played May 13-15 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Three-time All-American Chelsea Bramlett continues to spark the Bulldogs at the plate. The Cordova, Tenn., native is pacing the SEC and ranked second nationally with a .536 batting average. A finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and USA Softball Player of the Year, Bramlett also tops the SEC with 54 runs scored, 90 hits, six triples and an NCAA-best 58 stolen bases.
Sophomore Ka'ili Smith tops the Dawgs with 10 home runs and 49 RBI while ranking second with seven triples and a .340 batting average. Erin Nesbit earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors this past week after hitting the game-winning home runs in both of MSU's wins at Auburn. The Acworth, Ga., native has belted a team second-most six home runs and four triples during her rookie campaign.
In the circle, the Dawgs will be looking for another outstanding effort from sophomores Misty Flesher and Lindsey Dunlap. Flesher picked up her 12th win of the year at Auburn. The Lone Grove, Okla., native, who has won three-straight decisions, has posted a 3.78 ERA while striking out 62 over 118.2 innings.
Dunlap earned her fifth win of the season in the second game at Auburn. The Hueytown, Ala., product paces MSU with 65 strikeouts and has compiled a 4.62 ERA over 66.2 frames.
State's hurlers will face one of the league's most-potent offenses in a UF squad that is hitting .324 as a team. Michelle Moultrie paces the Gators (35-7, 15-4 SEC) with a .423 average. Francesca Enea, a .358 batter, tops the SEC with 17 home runs and ranks second in the league with 54 RBI.
Stephanie Brombacher has been Florida's top hurler in the circle this season. She has compiled a 24-5 record and 2.14 ERA while registering 172 strikeouts over 156.2 innings. Ensley Gammel has seen most of the other pitching action, tallying a 10-2 record and 2.24 ERA.
